Our vineyards lie on the slopes of the Simonsberg, where elevation, aspect, and soil diversity shape the character of every wine we produce. From decomposed granite to shale-rich soils, each parcel offers its own expression, carefully matched with the varietals best suited to its site.

The diversity of our site plays a defining role in the character of our wines. Vineyards planted higher on the slopes benefit from cooling breezes, allowing for slower, more measured ripening, while those lower on the property experience greater exposure, contributing depth and concentration.

This variation across the estate allows us to work with a range of expressions, resulting in fruit of balance, structure, and clarity. It is here, in the vineyard, that each wine begins to be shaped by place and guided by the land itself.

Stellenbosch is widely regarded as South Africa’s premier wine-growing region, defined by a unique interplay of climate, topography, and soil diversity.
Its Mediterranean climate is tempered by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, with cooling breezes that allow for slower, more balanced ripening and greater expression of fruit.

A varied landscape of mountains, valleys, and elevations creates a mosaic of vineyard sites, each contributing its own character and complexity. This diversity is what gives Stellenbosch its depth and distinction.

At Remhoogte, our position on the slopes of the Simonsberg allows us to harness these conditions fully, shaping wines that are grounded in place and expressive of both site and vintage.

Site Specific Characteristics

The soils and slopes of Remhoogte are remarkably diverse, playing a defining role in the character of our wines.

Shale (Swartland Shale)
Formed from ancient sediment laid down millions of years ago when the area lay beneath the ocean, this shale is found in a narrow band across our highest vineyards. These soils are shallow and low in nutrients, encouraging the vines to work harder and resulting in naturally lower vigour and greater concentration. Wines such as Sir Thomas Cullinan, Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Aspect Merlot, and Free To Be Riesling are drawn from these blocks.

Decomposed Granite (Tukulu, Oakleaf, Klapmuts, Kroonstad)
Derived from weathered granite over millions of years, these soils are typical of the Stellenbosch mountains. Well-drained and low in water retention, they naturally limit vine vigour, producing fruit with intensity, structure, and depth. Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Cinsault and Petite Verdot are planted across these sites.

Across the estate, these well-drained soils warm quickly during the growing season, aiding even ripening and contributing to the balance and clarity of our wines.

Looking after our future

Sustainability at Remhoogte begins with a deep respect for the land and a responsibility to protect the farm for generations to come. Our approach is rooted in regenerative farming practices, with a focus on restoring soil health, encouraging biodiversity, and creating a more balanced ecosystem across the estate.

After harvest, cover crops are planted between the vineyard rows to help replenish the soils, improve structure, reduce erosion, and support microbial life beneath the surface. These crops play an important role in bringing vitality back into the vineyards, allowing the land to recover naturally after the growing season and preparing it for the next cycle.

Cattle and chickens also form part of this living system. Their presence helps naturally enrich the soils, manage growth between the vines, and encourage a healthier balance across the farm. Rather than viewing the vineyard as a single crop, we see it as part of a wider, interconnected environment where every element has a role to play.

These practices form part of our ongoing commitment to the future of Remhoogte. By preserving the integrity of our soils and strengthening the resilience of our vineyards, we ensure that the farm continues to thrive for generations to come.
